Restoration Update: Watching Paint Dry

Nothing much is happening with the Kelsey press lately, and I wanted to explain why. The paint that we chose dries from the Outside In. So I am literally watching paint dry and I have no clue how long it is going to take.

The next step, once everything has officially dried, will be to sand down and add a second coat to a few choice pieces. Not every part needs a second coat, but some (like the handle) will. Then we will get to watch paint dry all over again!

In the meantime, I am working on a new block, so check back soon for project details!

Porcuprints made it into another Treasury!

The wonderful Jan Flenner from fibremom just created a great treasury that included my Flamingos print! The treasury, called orange cocoa in the rain, features Oregon etsy sellers with low sales. As Jan puts it:

16 great Oregon shops that are a bit short on sales and deserve some attention.

So true! What a excellent idea for a treasury! Thanks again Jan!

Porcupine Art by Calvin Nicholls

As you might have gathered from my company name, I love porcupines. Any artist featuring a porcupine must be mentioned here. Therefore today I need to rave about Canadian paper artist Calvin Nicholls. Nicholls creates amazing 3-dimensional sculptures with ONLY scissors, paper, and a little bit of glue!

Missing Blue Skies

Everyone who lives in the Pacific Northwest knows that around this time of year the blue sky disappears for the next few months. My latest treasury on Etsy is an homage to the Missing Blue Sky. Hopefully it will tide us over until we get our blue sky back!

Kelly Tankersley of 88editions just featured my “Flamingos” print in a wonderful Etsy Treasury, Prints from Portland and Austin. The treasury features printmaking artists from both Portland, OR and Austin, TX (two of my favorite cities!).

Thanks Kelly, you made my weekend!

Tire Art by Wim Delvoye

Tires have been on my mind recently. On his commute yesterday, the tread on one of Doug’s tires separated from the steel belts (or something like that). In my google searches for tires, I can across an amazing artist, Wim Delvoye.

A Belgian artist, Delvoye carves intricate designs into the sidewalls and treads of used tires.

Restoration Update: Sandblasting, priming, painting

This past weekend was a big one for my little Kelsey press. After taking the whole thing apart, each piece of the casting needed to be cleaned of all the old paint, and re-painted to prevent rust and protect it from grease and printing ink (not to mention to make it look prettier!). Luckily, Doug has access to a sandblaster through his work. We determined that using a walnut shell medium in the sandblaster would remove the paint and dirt without damaging the surface of the casting, or removing any metal. An added bonus to using the sandblaster is that it drastically cuts down the amount of elbow grease needed to get the pieces down to bare metal.

Here is the Kelsey badge on the handle piece as we bought it:

The press in its original condition

As I mentioned in a previous post, the entire press had been spray-painted red without dismantling a single part. Who knows how many times it has been painted over in the course of its long life.

Here is Doug, sandblasting away!

Once sandblasted, the pieces looked like this:

The press after being sandblasted

While the sandblaster removed the paint, it did not remove any surface rust or dirt. So I still had to get down and dirty with the brillo pads and scrub to get some of the pieces shiny (like the platen and the case bed).

After sandblasting, I cleaned each piece, then primed and painted. I used a gloss X-O Rust oil-based enamel paint. This is the kind of paint used on farm equipment and the like. It is specially designed to protect against rust, resist weathering, and to repel grease. For the best adherence to the metal surface and to seal the surface against rust, this paint requires a primer coat. X-O Rust oil-based primer comes in a couple of different colors. I chose the gray metal primer, but it really doesn’t matter, since it will be covered up.

I decided on glossy black for the press color. I wanted it to be simple, yet elegant.

The press after the first coat of paint

It was a lot of work, but we got it done!

When it is all completely dry, I intend to go over the lettering on the handle and the main body casting with a silver paint to make the wording pop. Hopefully the shiny platen, chase bed and new dowel pins will compliment the silver lettering.

Check back often for more updates!
