Mount Hood at Midnight

Artist’s Statement:
For this print, I was inspired by medieval stained glass designs. The repeated frame pattern is a variation from one that I saw at Beauvais Cathedral in France. The central design is a view of Mount Hood in Oregon. From a window I saw a beautiful view of the mountain with an orchard in the foreground and a clear dark sky behind. To stylize the mountain, I thought about looking at a stained glass window from the outside (one only sees dark lines of the leading). So I broke down the mountain into its simplest lines to create sense of leaded glass.
To the rest of the scene I added the clouds and the stream. My inspiration for the clouds came from Japanese woodblock prints that include long wisps of colorful clouds that slither across the sky. In my print, the speedy movement of clouds in contrasted with the slowly moving water of the stream.
